Cynthia A. Gómez, PhD
Biography
Cynthia A. Gómez, PhD, is the founding director of the Health Equity Institute.
She previously served as co-director of the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (CAPS) at the University of California at San Francisco and has been a leading scientist in HIV prevention research since 1991. Her work has focused primarily on gender, culture and sexual health, on the development of prevention interventions, and on the translation of science to community practice.
Gómez earned a master's degree in Counseling and Consulting Psychology from Harvard University and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Boston University. Prior to her work in HIV, Gómez spent 12 years working in community health settings, including five as director of a child and family mental health center in Boston.
Gómez has been a health policy advisor for nearly 20 years. She was an appointed member to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS under both WJ Clinton and GW Bush administrations. In 2007 she was appointed by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the first California Public Health Advisory Council. Over the years she has served on several national advisory committees including the Centers for Disease Control's HIV and STD Advisory Council; Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Advisory Committee on Women's Services; and the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Prisoners and Research. She is a member and past chair of the board of directors of the Guttmacher Institute and serves on several other boards of directors including Public Responsibility in Medicine & Research, and the San Francisco Public Health Foundation.
Research Interests
HIV prevention, intervention clinical trials, implementation/operations research, health disparities, biomedical ethics, sexual behavior, reproductive health, behavioral determinants of health risks, HIV/AIDS health policy, science-community partnerships, and translation of science to practice.
Current Projects
- The Health Equity Institute (HEI) has partnered with the California Latinas for Reproductive Justice to address the urgent need to reframe the current discourse about Latino/a youth sexuality and childbearing. HEI will train and mentor future generations of sexuality researchers from high school students to postdoctoral fellows. We will study individual and systemic factors underlying the complexities of adolescent Latino/a sexuality and increase our understanding of how Latina/o youth balance competing cultural and social values regarding sexuality, parenting, and education; and develop recommendations to promote positive sexual health and educational outcomes.
Bay Area Network for Positive Health (BANPH)
- A consortium of 13 agencies from the Oakland/San Francisco Bay Area committed to reducing the number of local HIV+ persons out of care. Our goal is to reduce this number by 8% in the first year (N=600 of 8,000) through a coordinated effort that locates these individuals, strengthens the peer/social networks that will help link them to care, and reduces provider-based barriers. BANPH agencies include those who can reach the most marginalized and disenfranchised persons including those living in poverty, transitioning out of jail/prison, substance users, transgender persons, and people of color. Our strategies for linking HIV+ persons to HIV care come from a holistic and empowering model. BANPH's success will be evident, not only by the number of HIV+ persons we engage in care, but by the increased collaboration and coordination across relevant service agencies throughout the Bay Area. Recently Completed Projects
HEI partners with CommonHealth ACTION and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- The CDC has initiated an effort to develop a microenterprise and economic empowerment program curriculum for low-income African Americans in the U.S. that is designed not only to improve financial self-sufficiency, but also to protect and improve health. Specifically, the CDC and its partners are interested in how such an economic program might reduce the risks of HIV/AIDS and intimate partner violence among African-American men and women by increasing financial independence and control, income, personal effectiveness, and self-efficacy. The project benefits from a national group of experts helping to design the program components and curriculum, and will also include three Community Consultations Boards - in the District of Columbia, Oakland, and New Orleans - to help guide the development of the model program. CommonHealth ACTION serves as the overall coordinator for the project, working closely with the CDC. Dr. Gómez provides scientific leadership and intervention design expertise for the project.
GENERATIONS: Strengthening Women and Families Affected by HIV/AIDS.
- The goal of the GENERATIONS Initiative is to increase the capacity of community based organizations across the nation to utilize cutting-edge HIV prevention science to implement innovative, evidence-based, and effective HIV prevention interventions to reach at-risk women and girls. This is accomplished by providing comprehensive capacity-building support in the form of technical assistance from expert prevention scientists, program evaluation from an independent evaluator, and networking among peer grantees. HEI provides scientific and programmatic expertise for the Generations III Initiative.
The MASAI Project (Men Acting with Strength and Initiative)
- This pilot research aims to advance HIV prevention theory through examining the complex social determinants of the Down Low, defined as sex between men who are heterosexually identified. The proposed project presents a new area of research into the social context of sexual risk among African American bisexually active men.
