Four Films Currently in Production!
Documentary for Health & Social Justice is a filmmaking class offered by the Health Equity Institute and Cinema department at SF State University. This year four student teams, each made up of health education and cinema majors, are creating a series of films that explore Latina/o youth sexual health and wellbeing inspired by the ELAYO (Empowering LAtino YOuth) Project.
Each film represents a different focus:
- BODY REPUBLIC - A focus on Policy
- CONNECTIONS - A focus on Sex Educators
- CARIÑO - A focus on Parents
- SEX AS WE'LL KNOW IT - A focus on Youth
During the Fall 2011 semester, teams:
- Researched their focus area
- Outlined the goals and objectives of their film
- Reached out to community-based organizations to start conducting informational (non-filmed) interviews and identify film participants.
During the Spring 2012 semester, teams:
- Film from Feb to mid-March
- Edit 10-15 minute documentary from March-May
- Invite community organization representatives to provide feedback at works-in-progress screenings
- Create an accompanying discussion guide for their film to help facilitators foster dialogue and discussion after viewing.
All finished films will be posted online, along with community organization descriptions, discussion guides and other facts and resources.
Films will release May 2012!
